A Major Step Forward for Cleaner Heating Fuel

We’re pleased to share an important update for our industry and for our customers.
ASTM has officially approved a revised fuel oil specification, ASTM D396-26a, which now includes new grades for biodiesel blends ranging from B21 up to B50 for heating applications. This marks a significant milestone, providing a clear and trusted standard for the use of higher blends of cleaner, renewable fuel.
This progress is the result of collaboration across the industry. We’re grateful to Clean Fuels Alliance America, NORA, and the oilheat equipment manufacturers whose leadership, research, and technical expertise helped make this possible.
What This Means for You
As a homeowner, this update is about more than technical standards; it’s about giving you better options.
Higher biodiesel blends offer a cleaner-burning alternative to traditional heating oil, helping to reduce emissions while maintaining the comfort and reliability you expect. With this new standard in place, these fuels can be delivered with greater consistency and confidence.
In practical terms, that means:
- Cleaner energy choices for heating your home
- Reliable performance with fuels designed to meet proven standards
- More flexibility as new fuel options become available over time
